A Look of Place: Burgandy Viscosi Brings Mi Casa Cantina to Life

PASSION speaker at celebration dinner

At SSP America, we’re PASSIONate about creating airport dining experiences that bring an authentic taste of place. With our boutique brand, Mi Casa Cantina, that philosophy extends beyond the menu to the walls themselves, where colorful murals tell stories of tradition, culture, and community.

We recently sat down with artist Burgandy Viscosi, who’s painted murals for Mi Casa Cantina locations at John F. Kennedy International Airport, Seattle–Tacoma International Airport, Ontario International Airport, Calgary Airport, and, most recently, San Jose Mineta International Airport.

The murals are inspired by the traditions of Día de los Muertos, each with a unique twist. Burgandy explained, “All of my murals are based around Día de los Muertos, but in a soft way. I also weave in elements from the local area to connect with the community, like the Statue of Liberty at JFK, orcas in Seattle, sheep in Calgary, and for San Jose, the agricultural fields and colors that reflect the city’s energetic vibe.” Combining these San Jose-specific elements with the story of La Catrina and the Aztec deity Mictēcacihuātl results in a mural that both honors the roots of Día de los Muertos and celebrates the region’s unique spirit.

When asked how she feels her designs reflect Mi Casa Cantina, Burgandy said, “The murals mirror the energy of Mi Casa, welcoming, colorful, and connected to tradition. They create a space where travelers can step out of the everyday and feel like part of a story.”

And yes, she’s enjoyed Mi Casa Cantina’s food firsthand, “I love Mexican cuisine—veggie enchiladas and chilaquiles are my favorites. I’ve had great meals at Mi Casa, and I think the food pairs beautifully with the atmosphere.”

Her journey as an artist has also been shaped by meaningful mentorship. Burgandy shared a piece of advice she carries with her, “An amazing mentor once told me ‘work out any of your challenges—life, business, relationships—on the canvas. That’s where you can find your presence. The rest of the world will meet you where you are.’”

She credits artists like James Crespinel, a mentor who has a gallery in Mexico, as well as Alex and Allyson Grey, both known for their visionary work, for inspiring her career.

One thing Burgandy loves about painting for airport restaurants is the atmosphere itself, “There’s such a vibe of excitement. Most people are on their way somewhere new. You’re in between places, so you fall out of your usual patterns. It’s a really inspiring energy to capture.”

SSP America is honored to collaborate with Burgandy. With every brushstroke, she helps us deliver not just a taste of place, but a look of place—transforming our restaurants into spaces where travelers can enjoy a meal, connect with culture, and experience a story.
