Kezia Oscar, Support Center Team Member and Professional Football Player

Careers, Community, People

Kezia Oscar spends her days as a specialist in people data, but she has another gig—she plays professional football.

Kezia is a cornerback for the Washington Prodigy, the Eastern Conference Champions in the Women’s National Football Conference (WNFC). The WNFC has three divisions and 15 teams throughout the US.

The upcoming season, which begins in April, will be Kezia’s second on the Prodigy and third in the WNFC. She played a season for the Mississippi Panthers before relocating to Northern Virginia with her two daughters in 2020. A lifelong athlete, Kezia first became interested in professional tackle football when she met Panthers players at her gym. They encouraged her to try out, and she was a natural.

Women must be at least 18 years old to try out and many play well into their 40s. Kezia describes the atmosphere as like a family where children run along the sidelines while their moms crush it on the gridiron. Kezia, a mom to two daughters ages five and two, loves that her oldest serves as a water girl for the team. The team sets a good example for children of all ages, letting them know they can do anything no matter their gender. They also host events where girls have the opportunity to do drills and exercise with the team.

The Washington Prodigy, a 501C non-profit organization, is sponsored by Adidas, Diggs, and Rydell, and the players don’t get paid—yet. The league needs attention. Former NFL player AJ Green and former NFL coach Katie Sowers support the league through camps, attending championships, and generally trying to help the WNFC gain the public’s attention. This year, the Prodigy will be coached by former NFL running back LaMont Jordan.

When she’s not on the field or with her daughters, Kezia helps SSP America employees with onboarding and other human resources (HR)-related tasks. Some might say she has the most important job of all—ensuring everyone gets paid! She has a background in HR and family and medical leave (FMLA) and enjoys that her role gives her more experience with taxes and payroll and that she gets to use her accounting degree.

Kezia really enjoys SSP America’s culture. She says, “I’ve never worked for a company where I felt so cared about. I tell people ‘you come into the doors and you’re happy even when the workload is a lot, like during payroll.’ I know that I’m cared about, and they want to make sure that I’m ok. I’ve never worked for a company like that until now.”
